From room measurements to whole packs
Start with the finished dimensions of a rectangular room. Subtract only areas that will not be covered, such as a permanent built-in footprint where the product instructions allow this. Use coverage from the actual flooring box, rather than a guessed plank area.
Required area = net area × (1 + waste ÷ 100)
Packs to buy = round up (required area ÷ pack coverage)
A worked example
A 5 m × 4 m room is 20 m². With 10% waste, the target is 22 m². If a pack covers 2.2 m², you need 10 packs. If each pack costs 35 in your selected currency, flooring costs 350 before underlay, trim, delivery or labour.
Waste and pack rounding are different
Waste covers cuts and spare pieces. Buying whole packs can add further excess. The calculator shows purchased coverage as well as the waste-adjusted target so you can distinguish the two. Patterned work, damaged boards and difficult layouts can change the amount needed; select a waste allowance for your installation and check with the supplier.
Plan the whole room
- For an L-shaped room, split the shape into non-overlapping rectangles and add their areas. Calculate each separately, or use an equivalent rectangle with the combined area; verify trim separately.
- Underlay is estimated using waste-adjusted area. Check the roll size and whether your flooring already has an attached underlay.
- The trim quantity uses the complete rectangular perimeter, including doors. Adjust for openings and join lengths.
- Expansion gaps, moisture testing, subfloor preparation and installation method follow the product instructions, not this area estimate.
Common questions
Should I subtract furniture from the floor area?
Do not subtract movable furniture. Only subtract permanent areas you will not cover, and check the flooring instructions before deciding where the floor should stop.
Does the price include installation?
Only the material prices you enter are included. Add labour, preparation, delivery and other charges separately, or put a combined personal allowance in Other material costs.
Can I combine several rooms?
Calculate each non-overlapping room area, add the waste-adjusted areas, then divide by box coverage and round up once if the same product can be shared. Calculating every room separately may buy more packs.
